How to accept a job offer
The following tips will help you make an informed decision:
Accept or not to accept?
Imagine you receive a job offer immediately after your interview. Do you accept immediately, or do you express your gratitude, say that you are likely to agree, but like to sleep on it.
Both answers are correct. But even if you are fully convinced that you want the job, it's quite normal to ask for a period of reflection. Your interlocutor will understand that it is important for you to list the pros and cons and think about what is important in your career now.
Things to consider before making the decision
Before accepting or rejecting a job offer, take the following into account:
A counter offer from your current employer
What if your current employer offers you a counter offer, to prevent you from leaving? How do you deal with this?
Salary
Most of the time, money is an important factor when choosing a new employer. Is the salary offered in line with your education and experience? Use our salary checker to see whether your salary is competative, or read tips about salary negotiation.
Terms of employment
During your job interview, terms of employment, such as working hours and fringe benefits, have probably already been discussed. So consider what are important factors in the contract for you.
Location
The right job gives a lot of energy and ensures that you go home with a smile. Location is also an important factor for many job seekers. Are you going to drive a busy route every day, is the office easy accessible with public transport or by bike?
How do I accept the job offer? Verbally or in writing?
We are often asked: “I said ‘yes’ to my new employer. Do I still have to confirm my agreement?”. The answer is: yes. To avoid misunderstandings, it’s important to confirm your agreement in writing. For example, with a simple email.
Structure of the email
- Mention all relevant data such as names, business addresses, and dates
- Thank your new employer for the job they offer you
- Tell them that you are happy to accept the job offer
- Communicate your start date, or when you could possible start
- End on a positive note by saying you look forward to joining the team
Meeting your new colleagues?
Maybe your new manager will invite you to meet your new colleagues. Make sure you make a good first impression by, for example, preparing an elevator pitch.
You can of course always suggest to meet the team yourself. The better you get to know everyone in your department beforehand, the easier it will be on the first working day.
