Spring clean your CV with these six tips
Spring is just around the corner! You know what that means, right? Time for a spring clean, and we are not talking about your house only, your CV is also in need of a clean. It’s time for a big clean-up of your resume. This is your reminder to update your CV. You should update your resume every time you start a new job or gain a new skill. Even if you’re not applying for a new job, updating your CV regularly can also help you apply for an internal promotion. We’re sharing some tips that can help you do just that!
1. Out with the old, in with the new
Focus on your recent work experiences and professional achievements. Your education and academic accomplishments don’t have to be in the spotlight anymore. Mentioning your degree and academic institution (school) is enough.
2. Update your keywords
Take a look at different job descriptions you want to apply for and check the list of required skills and experience. This way you’ll find out what words hiring managers are searching on and your CV has more chances to be matched.
3. Actions speak louder (than words)
Use more active and descriptive verbs to grab the recruiters attention. Power words don’t only sound fancy, but they also highlight how proactive and analytic you are.
4. What’s in a name?
Your resume should be saved correctly. Hiring managers receive multiple CVs a day, so it’s important to state your full name in the file name, so it doesn’t get lost in the sea of resumes. PS: save your file as a PDF so your formatting will be preserved.
5. Time is money
Hiring managers have to go through a lot of CVs. A short summary gives a quick overview of your key skills and experience. These two to three sentences explain why you’re the right candidate for the job.
6. Spice it up
Adding things like volunteering, projects, awards and hobbies gives you extra brownie points with your potential new employer. This also shows that you’re an ambitious person in your personal life as well.
Congratulations! You’ve dusted off the cobwebs, swept away the clutter, and polished your CV until it shines like a spring morning. You can be very proud of your brand new CV. Whether you’re chasing promotions, exploring new horizons, or simply sprucing up, your freshly cleaned CV is your golden ticket. May your inbox bloom with interview invitations and may your career path be as vibrant as a spring garden.
P.S. If you find yourself humming “I Will Survive” while updating your CV, you’re doing it right!
